Training module
Environmental Emergency Preparedness & Response
Establish effective arrangements for environmental emergencies through defined response plans, drills and post-incident learning
Does your environmental emergency plan sit in a binder, untested and unclear during real events?
This module teaches how to build and maintain a rehearsed emergency response capability, from scenario selection to drills and post-incident improvement.
Overview
What this module is about
Many organisations can describe their emergency response procedures, but struggle to show that those arrangements are complete, role-owned, exercised, and kept current as operations change. Plans drift out of date, responsibilities are unclear during real events, and "lessons learned" do not reliably translate into system improvements.
This training module focuses on environmental emergency preparedness and response: identifying credible emergency situations relevant to environmental impacts, defining response arrangements and interfaces, running practical drills, and converting incident experience into controlled improvements.
Audience
Who it is for
Management system implementers and coordinators
Executives and department heads accountable for management system performance
Those responsible for processes, policies, assets, risks and controls
Auditors seeking insight into management-side practice, not audit technique
Consultants working on management system design, governance or improvement
Decision supportIs this module for you?
It is a good fit if you…
need ISO 14001-aligned emergency readiness that works in practice.
want clear roles, interfaces, and response arrangements.
run drills that expose gaps and drive improvement.
need plans that stay current as operations change.
want audit-ready evidence of preparedness and learning.
It may not be the best fit if you…
are looking for aspects and impacts identification.
want general crisis management or business continuity training.
expect technical spill response or emergency services training.
already run rehearsed, effective emergency response routines.
What to bring
This module assumes participants can already navigate basic management-system concepts and are familiar with basic concepts of risk management.
Helpful background includes:
Familiarity with EMS structures and documented information practices
Basic understanding of roles, escalation, and coordination in operational environments
Comfort working with realistic scenarios and evidence from operations
Agenda
What is taught
7 parts01Purpose and scope of environmental emergency preparedness
How environmental emergencies are defined in practice and how preparedness interfaces with operational control, compliance obligations, and improvement
02Building a credible emergency scenario set
How operations, materials, and site conditions are translated into plausible emergency scenarios and linked to potential environmental impacts and response priorities
03Response arrangements and role clarity
How roles, authorities, escalation paths, and external interfaces are defined, and how resources, competence, and documentation are specified for effective real-time response
04Operational integration
How emergency arrangements are connected to site infrastructure and routine controls, and how scenarios and responsibilities are kept current as operations and suppliers change
05Exercises, drills, and evaluation
How drills are designed to test realistic failure points and how results are evaluated to prioritise improvements without overengineering the process
06Incident learning into system improvement
How disciplined debriefing and evidence-based analysis are translated into controlled, verifiable system improvements
07Technology as support
How digital tools and AI-assisted summarisation can support drill documentation and action tracking while keeping judgement and accountability with people
Outcomes
Learning outcomes
01
Interpret ISO 14001 expectations for environmental emergency preparedness and response in implementer terms
02
Define a credible set of environmental emergency situations relevant to their operations and site conditions
03
Specify response arrangements with clear roles, escalation, resources, and external interfaces
Design and run a drill cycle that tests readiness and produces decision-ready improvement inputs
Evaluate drill and incident outcomes for adequacy and actionable follow-up
Translate incident learning into controlled improvements and verify that changes were implemented
Materials
The content and the assessment
Written module
The full content in writing, complete in itself. Videos are recorded for parts of it as an alternative way through, and the written module always carries everything.
Exercises
Graded work on the case organisation's own registers: structured answers checked against the encoded case, written answers scored against a rubric traced to it, with a trainer holding the final word on every assessed item.
On completion
The assessed exercises must be passed before the certificate is issued.
Scheduling
No public run of Environmental Emergency Preparedness & Response is scheduled at the moment. Tell us you are interested and we will let you know when the next one opens, or discuss running it in-house.

All modules share one company
Each module enters the company at a particular point in its history and finds it as that history has left it.
Northstar Integrated Services AG is a group headquartered in Zurich, operating in six European countries, with about 1,350 employees at the end of 2025. It provides digital operations platforms and managed operational services to regulated organisations in healthcare, the public sector and industrial services. Founded in 2008 as a field-operations firm serving business customers, it had about twenty-five employees when its first regulated customer, a hospital group, required documented decisions, named accountability and evidence on request. It moved into the platform business in 2016 and in 2024 acquired an operating business in Poland and the Czech Republic, whose legal entity continues inside the group.
Linked registers
Organisation and people, roles, risks, objectives, policies, documents and records, communications, findings, audits and reviews, interested parties, processes
Records, not summaries
The evidence sits in the registers and documents where a real organisation would keep it.
A history
The company has a timeline from 2008, so a structure can be examined before and after it changed.
More than one legal entity
A Swiss parent company and an acquired subsidiary in Poland and the Czech Republic, with customers in several jurisdictions
Why it matters
Judgement develops on material that is incomplete and partly contradictory, as it is in practice. Northstar is built that way on purpose. Because modules enter its history at different points, a governance structure can be seen while it is built, when it is outgrown and when it is rebuilt.
